Hate List 5.0

I can't believe that I almost went all of 2013 without updating my hate list.

1.) When someone forgets to remove the lint from the dryer screen- This may seem trivial (and it is), but I've lived in a house with three roommates for the past 18 months and not once has the dryer screen been free from lint as I transfer my clothers from the washer to the dryer. I mean, it only takes four seconds to do. Although, so does washing a spoon, fork, or knife and my room mates don't do that either. I've almost concluded that ignorance is at play here. Maybe they simply don't know that this is something that one should do after using the dryer.

2.) People that recline their seat on airplanes- Even before the liklihood of sitting next to an overweight flyer space on an airplane is extremely limited. We all understand that. For someone to consciously minimize the amount of room of the person behind them is beyond me. These people are pricks. Once they recline the person behind them almost has to recline in order to breathe, which leads to a domino effect.

3.) People that post pictures of the temperature gauge from their car/phone- We get it. It's either really hot, really cold, or you're in a place (most likely on vacation) that's considerably warmer than where you reside. I refuse to "like" any picture of this kind on Facebook/InstaGram. The lack of originality is infuriating.

4.) People that leave time on the microwave- I'll never understand how this happens. At least 2-3 times a week I'll enter my kitchen and see something like, ":37 Start?" on the microwave. To me, using a microwave is simple. You choose an amount of time that you think will heat your food to the right temperature and you hit "Start". Once the time is up you remove the food and if it's warm enough you go to town. If it's still too cold you enter more time. Why would you remove something before the timer goes off? Ok, maybe you're eyeballing the food and it looks ready, so you open the door. Hit the "Clear" button! It takes less than a second.

5.) The phrase "quick question"- I hear this allll the time and it drives me crazy. Why don't people just ask the question? Saying, "I have a quick question for you," only takes up more time than just directly asking the question. I don't even like when people say, "Hey, I've got a question for you." Does the person you're about to ask need a warning? Just ask the question.

6.) People that walk into a room and expect those already in it to acknowledge them- This happens to me at least twice a day. People I like a lot do it routinely. I've trained myself to not even turn. I just focus on the computer or television screen in front of me and wait for the person who entered the room to say something. A handful of times people have opened a door halfway and after I deliberately did not acknowledge them they chose not to enter and closed the door. Here's my point- the person opening the door or entering the room is the one that disrupted the homeostasis of the room. Why should the inhabitants of the room be forced to address the newcomer? The person entering the room surely has some purpose for doing so, right? Instead of waiting to be acknowledged they should state their reason for entering.

7.) Tweets/Facebook posts involving the phrases "said no one ever" and "asking for a friend"- Stop it. Pointing out things that people wouldn't say is not funny. Nor is asking a relatively embarassing question and playing it off like someone else asked you to ask.

8.) When the contestants on Jeopardy fail to reveal all of the clues on the board because their pace is too slow- Hey people, don't you know that I'm counting the number of answers that I get right?

9.) The word "ditto"- I can't believe that it took so long for this to make the list. Ditto is probably my least favorite word in the English language. Not only is tacky, it was featured prominently in the movie Ghost (1990) starring Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore. I can't think of an appropriate time to use this idiotic word. If the person to your right at dinner orders what you want do you say, "Ditto for me" to the waiter/waitress? No, you say, "I'll have the same."

10.) When people eat (myself) included in front of others that are not eating- As far as I'm concerned eating is either a shared experience or a solo activity. I can't stand when people eat in front of me or when I'm forced into eating in an area where someone else is not doing the same. I try my hardest to avoid these situations at all costs, but they still happen from time to time.

Hate List 4.5

I last updated my Hate list in June, but I’ve been incensed multiple times since, so it’s time to vent. For previous editions of my Hate list click here. Now on to the hate…

1.) Unnecessary handshakes- There are three guys at work who insist on shaking my hand even though we see each other roughly 3-5 times a week. They go out of their way to open a door for the sole purpose of saying hello or goodbye to me and for some reason a verbal exchange just isn’t enough for them. I would have no problem if they popped their head in a studio and said, “Just wanted to say hi,” or, “Have a good night,”, but it drives me crazy that they walk over to me with their hand extended. I’m usually working on something (with headphones on) and have to stop what I’m doing, turn towards them, and shake their hand. I don’t get it. Handshakes are for business deals or after critical conversations with a boss. They aren’t for simply hellos and goodbyes anymore. By the way, there’s also a 60+ year old guy at work who tries to be cool and offers pounds to anyone and everyone with his elbow fully extended and he bothers me slightly less than the handshake guys.

2.) People that drag out their trips on Facebook- If I ever make an ultra hate list this item will definitely make the cut. I almost made an entire post about this annoying trend. I understand that people get excited about going places and want to share their joy on Facebook. I’m fine with that, but too often I see people that make numerous posts about the same trip. It starts with the, “Vegas booked” status update which several people comment on and like. Three weeks later it’s, “24 days until Vegas!!” Soon enough it’s, “I’ll be in Vegas one week from now!” and “All I have to do is get through this week and then it’s Vegas.” The day of the trip we get a check in from the airport and an update that reads, “Vegas bound!” Hours later we get the check in from the Vegas airport of the hotel. The last day of the trip we usually see a picture of a pool or some morning cocktails with a caption that reads, “I’m going to miss Vegas,” or, “Last day in Vegas. I’m going to miss my morning mimosas.” A day or two after the trip we get the photo album, which is probably the only thing I’m ok with. If you go somewhere, whether it be Vegas, Cancun, or Cali, you have every right to be excited about it, but I think it’s unnecessary and annoying for you to make 6-7 posts about the same trip.

3.) People that post the distance that they’ve run on Facebook or Twitter- I hattttttte people that brag about the distance that they run every day. Run to get in shape, stay in shape, or to train for a race (half marathon, marathon, etc.), but please don’t broadcast your efforts to the world. It’s nice that you’re running because more people should be doing so, but your Nike Plus Facebook that tells me about how you ran 3.1 miles today is repulsive.

4.) Jokes about the Mayan calendar- On January 15th I tweeted, “The Mayans were right will undoubtedly be the most overused joke of the year.” Let’s just say that I nailed it. Every time something remotely surprising in sports happens someone will tweet, “I guess the Mayans were right.” In fact, Grantland.Com’s Bill Simmons has made the Mayans joke upwards of 5 times this year (twice in January, once in March, once in August, once in September, and once in November) and I cringe every time.

5.) People that say that they like college basketball more than the NBA- I hate these people because they’re wrong. What they mean to say is that they like their favorite college basketball team more than they like their favorite NBA team. For example, if I gave you the choice of watching Kansas @ Missouri or Celtics @ Lakers tomorrow night on TV which would you rather watch? Let’s not even get into how much better it would be to attend the NBA, but even when it comes to watching on TV it’s not even close. There’s simply too much turnover in college basketball. By the time you get to know the players they’re gone. I work in sports (and have produced a Kansas basketball game this season) and can only name one player on Kansas and one on Missouri. I know almost every player on the Celtics and Lakers (and most people, even girls, know Rondo, KG, Pierce, Kobe, Nash, and Dwight). Now, you might be saying, “That’s not fair. The Celtics and Lakers are two of the most storied franchises in NBA history and one of the best rivalries.” You’re right, but Kansas is one of the top 5 programs in college basketball history and their rivalry with Missouri is one of the Top 5 in the sport. And if you didn’t know that about Kansas and Missouri then it further proves my point. Also, Kansas is currently ranked 10th in the country and Missouri is 16th. The Celtics currently have the 11th best record in the NBA and the Lakers are tied for 14th.

Hate List 4.0

It's time to update my Hate List. In case you were wondering, I got the idea from a girl I went to high school with who started her own list on Facebook. If you'd like to read my first three installments you can access them by clicking here.

1.) People who say/post the phrase “Is this real life?”- Yes, it is. Grow up. In many ways saying “Is this real life?” is a not so clever way to humblebrag. Listen many resorts are nice, so when you post a picture from your hotel room view or from the pool/beach I don’t think that you’ve gone to an alternate universe. My mind can comprehend that you’re just in a place where the weather is warm and the sun is out.

2.) People who ask for a retweet- 98% of the time it’s pathetic, desperate, and downright embarrassing. I’m willing to give those looking to promote a good cause a pass, but even then I think asking for a retweet is dumb. How many times have you clicked on a link that was retweeted by a celebrity and is preceded by the words, “Can I get a RT?”? Why do people ask celebrities for a retweet anyway? Just so they can tell their friends that Lady Gaga retweeted them? If someone told me that a celebrity retweeted them my first question would be, “What was the tweet?” If they replied, “It was ‘Can I get a RT for my birthday?” I’d never talk to them again. If you really want someone marginally famous to retweet you than think of something witty or provocative and take your chances.

3.) Facebook telling me which articles or videos my “friends” have read or watched- On the surface this seems like it’s actually a pretty good idea, but I really don’t care what some broad I met in my sophomore year History class is reading or watching on Socialcam (what is that?). There has to be a way to turn this thing off, right? Or to at least only allow it to show me what certain friends have read. There are certain people whose book/article recommendations I actually care about, but it’s a select few (10-12 tops).

4.) Girls that use their middle name as their last name on Facebook- I understand that some girls do this when they are searching for a job. I also understand if girls are teachers and don’t want their students to find them on Facebook. I get that. But either I have 23 or so “friends” that are teachers or looking for a job (yes, I counted) or girls do this just to seem cool. Seriously, other than the 4 pictures from college where you’re holding a solo cup and the post on your wall from your BFF where she says, “Where’ve you been slut?”, what is there to hide?

Let the record show that some guys change their last names to something dumb (never their middle name), but they’re just gay. Not gay in the mocking sense. Actually homosexuals.

5.) The Taco Bell commercial where a Mexican looking kid allegedly drove over 900 miles just to try the new Doritos Locos Taco- To even suggest that this actually happened is an insult to the intelligence of the American public. No one drives 900 miles unless they’re moving or traveling across country, let alone to try a taco that has a shell made of Doritos.

6.) Moving- I recently moved for the 4th time in 42 months and I always think that the process is going to be easy, but I’m always wrong. Once I move all of my clothes (despite my lack of even a remote sense of fashion I have a lot of clothes) I think that I’m home free, but I’m not. I know that the big stuff is going to be a pain, but it’s the small tables, trash cans, etc. that you never account for. They keep adding up and ultimately drive you crazy. The worst part of moving is that it’s never a smooth process. Something invariably goes wrong. For example, two weeks ago I quickly packed a bunch of random stuff in a suitcase before realizing that an entire bottle/carton of laundry detergent spilled everywhere because the top wasn’t fastened tightly enough. I also had already moved my screwdrivers into my new residence, so I had to go buy another one in order to take the feet off of my couch.

7.) Looking for a parking spot- Good luck getting a parking spot at ESPN at 1:05 on a Tuesday. Nothing in my day to day life is more frustrating than looking for a parking spot. Obviously I go George Costanza style and circle for the dream spot before meticulously scouring row after row in 3 different lots. The worst is watching 2-3 cars pull into empty spots during my mile walk to the office after finally finding a spot after 10-15 minutes of searching.

8.) Basic grammatical errors- One of the producers at work consistently gets the words ‘affect’ and ‘effect’ mixed up and it drives me crazy. Every time he hands me a pregame show format I find an error within 30 seconds. It’s not that I’m even trying to find them, I just do. It’s always trivial stuff like ‘your’ and ‘you’re’ or ‘our’ and ‘are’, but it baffles me how people in high places get by without a basic understanding of grammar.

9.) Coverage of Tim Tebow- There is a promo for The Herd with Colin Cowherd about Tebow that I must have heard about 585 times by now in which the Herd essentially says, “Tebow’s a backup quarterback. He’s going to be on the punt team. Why are we talking about this? Stop it.” While I don’t disagree, putting it into a promo and playing it over and over runs counter to his very message. Listen, Tebow is a lightning rod for members of the sports media and religious fanatics everywhere. He is a constant talking point. That said, saying that we shouldn’t talk about Tebow just adds fuel to the fire because by doing so you are actually talking about Tebow. It’s a self-serving argument that adds to what has become a vicious cycle.

It’s only mid-June and I’m reaching my breaking point with Tebow talk. I can’t imagine how I’ll feel in October.

10.) Betty White- I refuse to join in on America’s love affair with her. She’s 90, so I respect the fact that she still has her faculties and is still working, but I don’t care for anything that she’s done. As far as I’m concerned she’s the old lady from a Snickers commercial. Now she has a television show? Are we serious?

Hate List 3.0

I can't believe it's taken me almost 18 months, but it's time to update my Hate List. For those new to the blog I completely ripped the idea from a girl I went to highschool with who created a hate list on her Facebook profile. My previous two installments can be found here and here.

1.) Folding- For the first 18 years of my life my mom did my laundry. I always assumed it was this daunting task that took forever. For that reason I was always very thankful that my mom took the time out of her day to wash my clothes. From the outside looking in it just didn’t seem like a task that I could handle by myself.

Now that I’ve done my own laundry for 6 of the past 7 years (my grandmother did my laundry for me during my senior year of college because I didn’t have a washer/dryer in my beach house) I’ve realized that the chore is actually incredibly simple. Yes, it’s time consuming, but you can get a lot done during the interim. You just have to be mindful of how long your clothes have been in the washer or dryer.

What really sucks about doing your own laundry is folding your clothes. As you remove your clothes from the dryer you assume that the task is done, but in reality it’s just getting started. While on the surface folding looks relatively easy and straightforward it’s not. It’s tedious, time consuming, and stressful. Some garments you fold, some you have to put on a hanger, others need to be ironed, socks need to be paired, etc.

It should be noted that I’m also terrible at folding clothes to fit into a backpack, suitcase, etc. I can fold clothes in half. That’s about it. Anything that involves multiple folds is out of my range.

2.) Canker sores- The worst, right? I literally have no idea how they form or where they come from , but canker sores are incredibly painful. Not in the sharp, biting sort of way. More in the annoyingly consistent while occasionally more irritable way. I don’t know how, but canker sores are completely debilitating. They consume your entire being and render you out of commission for their entire existence. Canker sores make it hard to think, eat, sleep, write award winning blog posts (yes, I’ve had one for about 4 days now- a canker sore), etc.

3.) When people leave their blinker on- Seriously though, are you going to turn here or not? I can’t figure out how this happens. First of all, when you turn your blinker on you can hear it when it blinks, right? That aside, it’s pretty hard to accidentally turn your blinker on, so at some point the culprit must have thought that they should turn and/or change lanes, but instead continued to go straight because most blinkers turn off once a turn is completed. I wish there was a way to communicate to these bonehead drivers. Speaking of which…

4.) When a car forces me to release from cruise control- I’m not sure how many of you are familiar with highway driving. I say this because I recently had to explain to my cousin what cruise control is. For the uninitiated, cruise control equipped cars allow the driver to accelerate to a desired speed where they can then click a button and the car will maintain that speed until the driver hits the brake pedal. I often use this feature only during long drives on the highway. In fact, when I was purchasing my new car in January the only requirement that my dad had was that the car had cruise control. If I found a brand new Ferrari for $100 my dad’s first question would have been, “Does it have cruise control?”

So the worst thing ever is when you have cruise control set at 77 miles per hour and a car in the speed lane doesn’t get over to the center or right lane in time and you have to hit the brake to release the cruise control before accelerating back to your desired speed and re-setting the cruise control.

It’s also pretty terrible when you and another car are taking turns passing one another the highway when you have cruise control. I wish there was a way to communicate the fact that you’re on cruise control to the other car. Sometimes I try to lift up my right knee so that they can see it to signify that I’m not pressing the gas pedal, but I don’t think the message is received very often.

I really think that in 10-15 years we’ll have a basic set of messages that we can send to other drivers. The horn has only gotten us so far. Maybe the driver’s side or passenger side windows could briefly turn opaque to show a set of 5-6 specific messages.

1.) You’re blinker is on
2.) I’m on cruise control, so this is all your fault.
3.) Go fuck yourself
4.) Turn that shitty music down
5.) I’m sorry. Totally my fault.
6.) Honk for me, Trucker.

5.) Girls that call their female friends their “lovers”- If I see one more Facebook status that says something to the effect of, ”Can’t wait to see my lovers tonight!” I’m going to snap.

6.) The PCMatic commercial-

I don’t think the word hate is strong enough for the way I feel about this commercial. I mean, I get that they are just trying to get viewers of this commercial to remember the name of their product/website, but saying PCMatic 12 times in the course of a minute? That’s just annoying. I can’t change the channel fast enough when I see it.

Also, the flawed logic (not to mention the horrendous acting) of the commercial bothers me greatly. Apparently this couple shares a car (“I need the car anyway”) with the license plate PCMATIC, but somehow the man has never heard of PCMATIC?

7.) The way Michelle from Bachelor Pad 2 said “Graham.”- She didn’t completely botch the name, but there was something different about the way that she said it. I still haven’t really put my finger on it, but something was definitely wrong.

See if you can help me out. Listen to the 1:44 mark.

It should be noted that I don’t hate either Michelle or Graham, but the way Michelle said Graham’s name bothered me enough not to root for them.

8.) Tattoos- They are unattractive and will look horrendous when you’re older. I don’t get the appeal. I understand when people get tattoos that serve as reminders of significant people or events (the loss of a friend, an armed service man or woman getting ink to remind themselves of their service), but Chinese symbols? Random quotes?

I’ve heard that tattoos are a racial issue, and they might very well be, but my counter argument to that would be Robert Swift and Chris Anderson.

Have I mentioned how much I'm going to miss the NBA season?

Lastly, if you’re going to get a tattoo just remember that the placement is of supreme importance. There are tasteful ways to do this. For the opposite of what to do please look no further than Stephon Marbury and Mike Tyson.

9.) My cell phone charger- I can’t go a day without having to charge my phone. It’s horrendous. It’s gotten to the point where I’ve gone down to my buddy’s apartment in NYC with my charger in my pocket.

All that said, I literally can’t imagine life without a smartphone these days. I got my first in December and it’s completely changed my life. Having the internet at your finger tips is incredible. I’ve also been so immersed in sports lately that I get most of my news from the USA Today app on my phone.

10.)How everything needs to be politically correct- Our society is wayyyyy too sensitive. The way that everything has to be done in said in ways to avoid offended anyone bothers me immensely. For example, two weeks ago New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady (Gisele’s husband) was asked if he had a message for the team’s fans in advance of their home opener. The golden boy said, “Yeah, start drinking early. Get nice and rowdy. It's a 4:15 game, a lot of time to get lubed up. Come out here, and cheer for the home team.” A short while later the team released a statement which said that what Brady meant was “Be hydrated, drink a lot of water and drink responsibly.” Are we serious? Do you really think we're that dumb? What was going through the PR person's mind when they wrote that? What bothers me the most is that Brady's comment was not offensive in any way, shape, or form, but team officials still felt compelled to cover their asses and release that horseshit statement. People drink beer at football games. Get over it.

Hate List 2.0

Well folks, I think it's about time to update my hate list. Again, it's more of a "things that irriate/annoy me" list, but hate sounds a lot cooler. For those of you that have forgotten, my first installment went a little something like this:

1.) One word text messages
2.) Women that keep their maiden names
3.) Cigarette smoking
4.) Drew Barrymore
5.) People that wait at a 4-way stop sign until an oncoming car comes to a complete stop before they go
6.) Pocket dialing
7.) Touchdown. Commercial. Kickoff. Commercial.
8.) The word "cliche"
9.) People who smack their lips when they eat
10.) The "Happy Birthday (insert name here)" Facebook wall post

And now for installment version 2.0....

1.) People who reference the speech writing process when giving a speech- Like give the speech, don't tell the audience about your thought process when you sat down to write the speech. I think it's tacky when people say things like, "When I was first asked to give this speech I immediately thought of the quote by", "When I thought about what I would say today, I wrote down a few key points", "In college I was taught to start a speech with a quote, joke, or personal story".

Is your speech about giving a speech? or is there an actual topic? The commencement speaker at my sisters' graduation last weekend commited this faux pas and it particularly bothered me because that is like the major league of giving speeches.

Speaking of giving a commencement speech, I think I'm going to add that to my lifelong to-do list. I don't know how I'm going to become worthy of such an honor, but I think I could deliver a rip-roaring, practical commencement address.

2.) People who claim that they can't see a credit card/ticket screen- I've been behind two such people (more often than not women) in the past month and it's irked me both times. The first was a woman buying a train ticket on the platform who took forever claiming that she couldn't see the screen because of the glare. Now I'll admit that sometimes there is a glare, but it's really not that hard to deal with. All you have to do is position your body in front of the screen and focus just a little bit and you should have no problem. Another fool proof method is to wear sunglasses (which I do not do).

Which brings us to the second time this happened to me in the past month. A woman in front of me at the checkout in the grocery store claimed that she couldn't read the credit card screen, which is mind boggling because there isn't a glare when you're indoors. Her problem was that she was wearing sunglasses (which I contend still shouldn't have made it difficult to read the screen).

I consider myself to be a relatively patient person, but when things like this slow me up, I get a little upset.

3.) People who fail to take control of the intersection when making a left hand turn- If you're the first in line at a red light and it turns green, under no circumstances should you have to wait at that red light again. How people don't realize this is beyond me. Let's say you're taking a left, but a long line of cars in the opposite direction is going straight. What you should do is idle out into the middle of the intersection to "take control". This way, when the light turns red, you have to complete your turn or else traffic can not continue. I'm under the impression that at least two cars per green light cycle should be able to make a left hand turn even if traffic in the opposite direction is continuous. Too many times have I sat behind someone that doesn't take control and is subsequently forced to wait through the same red light twice.

4.) The "Wow, that's a low price" Staples commercial- This, to me, is negative advertising. If I need office supplies I am now going to go out of way to avoid Staples because of this horrendously annoying commercial. I'm not kidding when I say that it's right up there with the 13 letter word for marriage proposal travesty that I bagged on months ago. I literally cringe every time I see it and immediately turn the dial.

5.) When all of the responses to an email chain on Gmail suddenly repurpose themselves and you have to scroll through them all to see the most recent response- I'm not sure if I explained that properly, but that's something that I'll never understand.

6.) Meryl Streep- Everyone always says that, "She's such a great actress" "She's the actress of our generation" "She's beautiful", but let's get a few things straight. I'm willing to admit that she's a very talented actress. There's no denying that; however I've never enjoyed any of her performances. To me, she seems a bit pretentious, especially at the Academy Awards. Also, she's definitely not the actress of my generation seeing that she's 37 years my senior. Lastly, she's by no means "beautiful" now and quite frankly she wasn't that good looking back in her hey day.

7.) When my DVR fails to record the scenes from the next episode- This isn't a huge deal, but I'm a sucker for the scenes for the next episode, so I get bothered when I miss them. I also routinely miss The Daily Show's moment of zen about once a week even though I record The Daily Show from 11-11:30 and The Colbert Report from 11:30-12. How that's possible I can't figure out. I realize that the DVR is set to record by exact times, but can't we figure out a way to record the shows themselves from start to finish?

8.) Ironing- I can't stand ironing. It's such a tedious and annoying task. Not to mention that I think I'm bad at it (if that's even possible). I'll iron a shirt and pants and there won't be any wrinkles. Then I'll put said shirt and pants on and it's wrinkles galore. Call me crazy, but I think that not having to iron your clothes ever again (as well as other tedious tasks) is a major selling point for marriage.

9.) Facebook messages from events- There's nothing worse than signing onto Facebook and seeing that you have a message only to then find out that it's from an event that you haven't responded to yet. Oh the party starts at 8:15 instead of 8:30? The open bar is $40 not $35? Seriously, I don't care. Stop wasting my time.

10.) Wearing glasses in the rain- There's some money to made here. Someone needs to invent something to literally wipe this problem away (sorry about the bad pun, it's what I do). I don't think wipers on glasses are really practical, but maybe water resistant glasses? Quickdry frames?

Hate List

Last night I was searching online for books that twenty somethings would enjoy (if you have any suggestions let me know) and after I read through a couple of lists it hit me. When's the last time you sat down and actually wrote out a list of any kind? A "to do" list, a grocery list, whatever. Maybe it's that everyone spends all day on their blackberry or that no one has the time, but I feel like lists have become outdated. This, to me anyway, is rather unfortunate because lists can be very helpful. Lists help you remember things. For example, before I went to the grocery store the other day I looked through my kitchen to see what I needed. Aside from the usual items I told myself that I needed new ice trays. Now I'm way too confident in my memory to write out a grocery list, but sure enough when I got back I had forgotten to get new ice trays. It seems trivial and it kind of is because I don't really need ice trays at all, but that feeling when you realize that you forgot something is one that I don't enjoy.

As I got to thinking about lists I was reminded of one that a girl from my high school made a few years back. In the About Me section of her Facebook page she created a list of things that she hates; a "hate" list. For the record, it was more of a pet peeve list, but hate sounds much cooler. She still has the "hate" list up and running and updates it every once in a while. A few examples from her list are: ipod walkers, wet dogs, clouds, seaweed, and widescreen dvds. Now this of course got me thinking of the things that I hate. We'll start with an item from her list that I hate as well.

1.) One word text messages-I have a friend who's notorious for texting people the letter "o" as in "oh" and for angrily texting question marks when someone doesn't respond to a previous text within 10 minutes. Similarily can we please stop texting "k" and "ya" to one another? I mean, I guess the previous texter sometimes deserves a little bit of the blame for posing a simple yes or no question, but would it kill us to write "ok sounds good/ok will do" and "yeah that's right" instead?

2.) Women that keep their maiden name- This, to me, is the ultimate slap in the face. Marriage is a commitment and if you can't sacrifice your maiden name, then why even bother getting married in the first place? When a man asks you to marry him and you say yes, you know going in that it's expected of you to take his last name as your own. Don't get on your high horse like a raging feminist and think about keeping your maiden name in any capacity. This hyphenated shit is out of control. I mean, if you keep your maiden name or try this hyphenated nonsense things will get real messy when you have kids.

3.) Cigarette smoking- This is my number one pet peeve. I can't figure out why twenty somethings smoke cigs. Not only is it extremely unhealthy, it's unattractive. Did the D.A.R.E campaign teach my peers nothing?

I give people above the age of 40 a pass for smoking cigarettes because back then they didn't know how bad they were for their lungs, but kids my age have no excuse for their chain smoking. Cigarette smoking also bothers me because it leads to cigarette breaks. For example, a girl I work with takes about 5 cigarrette breaks per shift. If the workload picks up she "can't handle it" and needs the stress relief of a cig.

It should be noted that I'm no saint when it comes to smoking. I smoke the occasional cigar and hookah, but I would guess that I do about as much harm to my lungs in a year that the average smoker does in a week.

4.) Drew Barrymore- She's unattractive and annoying.

5.) People that wait at a 4-way stop sign until an oncoming car comes to a complete stop before they go- I guess it doesn't hurt to be better safe than sorry, but come onnnn. Isn't it a bit over cautious to assume that everyone is going to blow right through a stop sign?

6.) Pocket dialing- A friend from highschool that I virtually never speak to must have pocket dialed me 15 times in June/July. I answered the first few times thinking he had something relevant to tell me, but all I heard was mumbled conversation. The next few times I just silenced the calls and moved on with my life. Then I started hitting ignore and calling him right back, but he never answered. Then one time I answered, hung up and sent him a text that said, "Dude, what's goin on here? You keep pocket dialing me?" He responded by saying, "No I didn't. I just wanted to see how youre doing." I was literally stunned. This clown had been pocket dialing me for a month and when I called him out on it he tried to play it off like he was trying to keep in touch. Un-beeeee-lievvvv-able. Sure enough I got two more pocket calls from him later that week.

7.) Touchdown. Commercial. Kickoff. Commercial.- There are plenty of enough natural breaks in a football game (touchdowns/field goals, changes of possession, timeouts, the end of quarters, and the two minute warnings) for commercials.

8.) The word "cliche"- I have a long standing belief that the word "cliche" is overused. To me, it's a catchy word that every kid in America thought was cool to say. "That's so cliche." "What a cliche answer." etc. I also hate unoriginal (cliche) romantic notions like asking a girl out/to marry you on Valentine's Day/New Year's Eve. I must say, however, that the greatest advice I've ever given was when I told a friend to break up with his long term girlfriend at 11:50 on December 31st by saying that he wanted to start the new year off right.

9.) People that smack their lips when they eat- A few of my former roommates smacked their lips so loud when they ate that I couldn't function within a 20 foot radius of them. Maybe I'm just ultra sensitive about the issue because my brother and I used to yell at each other for doing it as kids at the dinner table, but it's like nails on a chalk board to me now.

10.) The "Happy Bday (Insert name here)" Facebook wall post- If you know someone well enough to write a happy birthday message on their Facebook wall then take a little time and think of something else to say other than just "Happy Bday (Insert name here)"

Now I'll continually update this list whenever I think of more things that I hate. Suggestions are welcome.
